The latest issue of the journal Studia Socjologiczne features an article entitled “Retention through care? A systematic review of the literature on doctoral students”. Its authors are Maurycy Stempniewski, MA (Doctoral School of Social Sciences – Academia Rerum Socialium) and Prof. Dominik Antonowicz – head of the POBu Higher Education Research Group and a member of staff at the Institute of Sociology at Nicolaus Copernicus University.
The text addresses the growing importance of doctoral studies, which have been developing dynamically since the 1990s, both in terms of the number of degrees awarded and their role within the academic system. These changes are part of a broader process of transforming the model of doctoral education, sometimes referred to as a “quiet revolution”.
The authors set themselves three main objectives: to assess the scale of interest in research on doctoral students, to identify the countries where this topic is most frequently (or least frequently) addressed, and to highlight the key research issues present in the literature. To this end, they conducted a systematic review of publications from the most important international journals devoted to social research on higher education.
In the conclusion to the article – co-authored by Prof. Dominik Antonowicz, head of the Higher Education Research Group at the Faculty of Social Sciences – the authors consider why the issue of doctoral students remains relatively under-researched in Polish sociology. At the same time, they identify potential, promising avenues for further research in this area.
