The group of winners of the Miniatura 10 competition has grown to include further researchers from the Nicolaus Copernicus University in Toruń. The ranking lists for applications submitted in May and June feature five individuals from our university, who will collectively receive over 150,000 zlotys for their research.

‘Miniatura’ is a competition organised by the National Science Centre for young researchers from Polish research institutions who obtained their PhDs between 2014 and 2026. Applicants can apply for funding ranging from 5,000 to 50,000 zlotys for research trips and to carry out preliminary research and literature reviews. NCN grants offer researchers an opportunity to test their ideas and begin working on a project basis, which will prepare them to apply for funding in future competitions for full-scale research projects.

To date, five ranking lists have been published on the NCN website. In this year’s edition of the competition, grants have so far been awarded to 11 researchers from the Nicolaus Copernicus University in Toruń, including five in the last two calls (for applications submitted in May and June). The following researchers have received NCN funding for their projects:

Dr Renata Gołdyn-Badowiec from the Faculty of Law and Administration, who is carrying out a project entitled ‘Justice without barriers? Digital accessibility of the judiciary and the protection of victims with special needs in criminal proceedings’. The National Science Centre (NCN) has allocated 23,132 PLN for this purpose;
Dr Malwina Krajewska from the Faculty of Philosophy and Social Sciences, who is carrying out a project entitled ‘Waste, ritual and collective memory: pilot research on Tibetan end-of-life practices in contemporary France’. The National Science Centre (NCN) has allocated 39,043 zł for this purpose;
Dr Justyna Marcinkowska from the Faculty of Humanities, who is carrying out a project entitled “The Production of Heritage: Social Heritage Caretakers as Communities of Practice”. The NCN has allocated 29,526 zł for this purpose;
Dr Grzegorz Pastuszak from the Faculty of Mathematics and Computer Science, who is carrying out a project entitled ‘Galois covers and the Ziegler spectrum’. The NCN has allocated 18,920 zł for this purpose;
Dr Łukasz Rzepnicki from the Faculty of Mathematics and Computer Science, who is carrying out a project entitled “Stability and energy dissipation in the wave equation using methods of operator semigroup theory”. The NCN has allocated 40,700 zł for this purpose.
In this year’s round, grants were also awarded in earlier rounds (applications submitted in February, March and April) to:

Dr Marta Hałas-Wiśniewska from the Faculty of Medicine, who is carrying out a project entitled ‘The context-dependent role of paxillin in regulating the metastatic potential of cervical cancer – in vitro studies’. The National Science Centre (NCN) has allocated 49,995 PLN for this purpose;
Dr Adrian Krajewski from the Faculty of Medicine, who is carrying out a project entitled ‘The immunomodulatory role of TRPM8 receptors in malignant melanoma – in vitro studies’. The National Science Centre (NCN) has allocated 49,500 PLN for this purpose;
Dr Natalia Mucha from the Faculty of Biological and Veterinary Sciences, who is carrying out a project entitled “In the glow of city lights: the physiological, molecular and ultrastructural response of wild alfalfa species (Medicago sp) to artificial light pollution of the night sky”. The NCN has allocated 48,290 zł for this purpose;
Dr Dorota Nemecz from the Faculty of Biological and Veterinary Sciences, who is carrying out a project entitled ‘Investigation of the α5 subunit as a regulatory target for the modulation of the α4β2 nAChR receptor’. The NCN has allocated 49,830 zł for this purpose;
