Training description:
We invite you to participate in a classroom training course entitled “Assertiveness Training.” The proposed training and topics relate to the training needs identified in the performance appraisal process for employees who are not academic teachers. “Assertiveness Training” is designed for a maximum of 12 participants and will take place at the Bydgoszcz campus of the University on October 17, 2025, from 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. in room 78 in building “F” of the Collegium Medicum UMK at ul. Jagiellońska 15 in Bydgoszcz.

Training objectives:

  • understanding what assertiveness is and how it differs from aggression and submissiveness,
  • developing an attitude based on respect for oneself and others,
  • acquiring practical skills in expressing one’s opinions, requests, and boundaries,
  • practicing responses to criticism and pressure from others,
  • strengthening self-confidence in personal and professional relationships.

Presentation Skills for Researchers – April 24, 2025, 11:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m.

Today, researchers and research teams rely on external sources of funding for their research. The allocation of funds depends on the assessment of the “scientific excellence” of the planned research, which is carried out by external experts (civil servants, technical and subject matter specialists, business representatives looking for new technologies, and politicians preparing economic and social policy). The ability to present research results to various audiences involved in the management of funding programs is therefore extremely important. At the end of this training, each participant will have ideas and skills for preparing and delivering future presentations.

We invite you to participate in a classroom training course entitled “Stress management and counteracting professional burnout.” The proposed training and topics relate to the training needs identified in the performance appraisal process for non-academic staff.

The training is for a maximum of 12 participants and will take place at the Bydgoszcz campus of the University on November 28, 2025, from 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. in room 78
in building “F” of the Collegium Medicum UMK at ul. Jagiellońska 15 in Bydgoszcz.

Training objectives, participants:

  • learn about the contemporary approach to stress (neurobiology and psychology),
  • understand the difference between short-term stress and burnout,
  • be able to recognize signs of overload,
  • learn about the PERMA model as a way to enhance well-being,
  • create a personal plan to support mental balance at work.

The trainings are conducted live, remotely (Zoom app) by Sean McCarthy, a prominent specialist associated with the European Commission’s framework programs for more than 30 years, an 30 years, and Sylvia McCarthy, a European Union policy analyst.

Participants at previous meetings find the content universal. The issues of networking and professional proposal preparation can be used not only when working on applications to Horizon but also when obtaining funding from other research funding institutions. Contact with the trainer directly is encouraged to ask questions and get answers to nagging questions related to the application preparation.

  1. Identifying Opportunities and Networking in Horizon Europe

The first part of the course provides an overview of Horizon Europe Funding Landscape and visits each Pillar and each programme.

The second part of the course describes how coordinators select partners to submit applications and how to create strategic networks at European level.

Newcomers, the course will help develop their European networks. Experienced researchers will help improve networking activities.

  1. How to Write a Competitive Proposal for Pillar II (Horizon Europe)

The course focuses on the second pillar of the Horizon Europe program. It first describes how to analyze a Pillar 2 work program. It then explains how scientists with high success rates approach Pillar II. This course shows researchers how to screen proposal ideas, screen partners and prepare the proposal in an efficient way. The course will provide participants with the skills needed to understand and plan proposals.

We invite you to participate in the training course “Coping with stress – causes and effective methods of counteracting the effects of stress”. The proposed training and topics relate to the training needs diagnosed in the process of employee evaluation of non-academic staff.

The training will be conducted stationary by Dr. Jolanta Jaworska (an outstanding specialist in psychology with experience as a therapist, coach, trainer).

The trainings will be held in the Bydgoszcz part of the University in the meeting room named after Professor Bogdan Romanski in the building “A” of the UMK Medical College at Jagiellonian 13 Street in Bydgoszcz.

The purpose of this workshop is to understand the mechanism of stress, recognize its first signals and counteract their effects, as well as learn practical strategies for responding to stress emergencies and master stress prevention techniques and effective relaxation methods.

Stress is an integral part of working life. In the right intensity, it is mobilizing and motivating. However, prolonged, severe stress is not conducive to our efficiency and quality of life. In extreme situations, it can contribute to the occurrence of many diseases, both emotional and somatic.

During the workshop, participants will learn about the mechanisms of stress emergence and typical reactions to stressful situations. They will practice techniques, both behavioral and cognitive, for dealing effectively with stress. They will learn methods for regulating emotions in stressful situations and quickly regaining life balance.

Training Description:

We invite academic teachers to participate in a training course on: Communication and conflict resolution with the specificity of working in cross-cultural environments. The training will be conducted in an interactive manner with elements of team coaching and active learning. An additional benefit will be the use of the FRIS® method, thanks to which participants in the training will acquire specific and practical information on personal mechanisms of thinking, acting and communicating with others. FRIS® provides guidance on what areas a person performs best in, how they should approach problem solving effectively, and how best to communicate with people with different Thinking Styles. Knowing one’s Thinking and Acting Style opens one up to the diversity of the people around them, so it supports collaboration with people from other cultures.

The FRIS® survey requires people to fill out (prior to the training) an online questionnaire consisting of 76 questions. Completion time is approximately 30 minutes. The training will take place in a stationary form in the Bydgoszcz and Toruń parts of the University, and will be implemented in three blocks, in groups of 15 people.

The workshop is based on the presenter’s evaluation of over 200 European research proposals and coordination of 16 European research projects. The workshop describes how to screen proposals using a process called a ‘Proposal Clinic’.

Decision-making and change management for managers:

Objectives of the training – improving the ability to plan strategic actions for one’s own organizational unit (based on the strategy and guidelines for human resource management).

Training program: decision-making – a basic managerial skill, the essence of the decision-making process, introduction to decision theory, problem vs. task, classification of problems in the organization, personality considerations in the decision-making process, personality predispositions and conditions in the decision-making process, self-justification mechanisms, emotions in the evaluation of phenomena.

Academics are invited to participate in a unique, English-language workshop on the methodology of acquiring funding from Horizon Europe. The trainings are conducted live, remotely by Sean McCarthy, a prominent specialist associated with the European Commission’s framework programs for more than 30 years.

  • Presentation Skills for Researchers

Day 1, 6.12.2022 r., 11:00-13:00, two modules: How to Present your Research Results. From this presentation 5 volunteers from the audience will be ask to prepare a 15-minute presentation on their research. These participants would ideally come from different backgrounds (hard/soft sciences, humanities etc). One volunteer will be asked to prepare for each of the following categories.

Volunteer 1:  Presentation to a business audience

Volunteer 2: Presentation to policy makers/politicians

Volunteer 3: Reporting the progress of a research project to an EU official

Volunteer 4: Presentation to other scientists

Volunteer 5:  Presentation to senior university managers

Day 2: 13.12.2022, godz. 11:00 – 13:00. The session will begin with the volunteers briefly introducing themselves to the audience. Each volunteer will then deliver the 15-minute prepared presentation and receive 15-minutes of feedback. (Max 30 participants)
