Organic Biodiversity Solutions Driving Innovation in Agriculture and Nutrition (Acronym: OBSIDIAN)

Project Description

The OBSIDIAN project addresses challenges related to climate change, soil degradation, and biodiversity loss. The initiative promotes Nature-based Solutions (NbS) in agriculture, focusing on the cultivation of neglected and underutilized crop species (NUCS) and the use of bioactive microorganisms (BM). The goal is to improve soil conditions, increase biodiversity, and reduce the use of agrochemicals. Integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) principles supports precision agriculture and strengthens food production systems.

Strategic Objectives of the OBSIDIAN Project

  1. Green Innovations for Future Agriculture
    The project develops environmentally friendly technologies—green chemistry, renewable energy, and NbS—by combining climate-resilient NUCS with BM. This approach reduces the use of chemicals in agriculture, enhances soil organism diversity, and increases ecosystem resilience to adverse environmental conditions. NUCS provide valuable, diverse food sources, contributing to improved diets and reduced carbon footprints.
  2. Clean Food – Contaminant Assessment
    OBSIDIAN identifies risks arising from pesticides and microplastics in the environment and offers strategies to mitigate their impact on food safety. The project also educates farmers and breeders about alternatives to conventional agrochemicals.
  3. AI and ESG for Sustainable Management
    Implementation of AI tools enables precise monitoring of crops and rapid response to extreme weather events. Integration of ESG principles fosters transparency, accountability, and public trust.
  4. NbS in Practice – From Concept to Standard
    The project implements NbS in agriculture through practical technological solutions, standards, and modern precision farming techniques. Outcomes include improved water retention, restoration of natural soil conditions, and increased biodiversity.
  5. Science in Service of Society and the Economy
    OBSIDIAN supports the development of health strategies based on high-quality food, promoting biodiversity and resilient food systems as foundations for sustainable development.

Potential Collaboration
The OBSIDIAN team consists of researchers and PhD students from fields such as biology, environmental sciences, chemistry, management, mathematics, and AI. The project is open to collaboration with research institutions, farmers, policymakers, and local communities.
