Name
EPIBIOMAT Research Group – Epibiocompatible Materials for Medicine and One Health
Project description
The EPIBIOMAT Research Group – Epibiocompatible Materials for Medicine and One Health is an interdisciplinary research team that brings together scientists from the physical, biological, and medical sciences. The group includes experts in materials chemistry, biotechnology, cell and molecular biology, microbiology, clinical medicine, tissue engineering, and veterinary science. This broad range of expertise enables a comprehensive approach to biomaterials research—from initial concepts and material design, through laboratory studies, to medical applications and implementation.
The main goal of the team is to develop next-generation biomaterials that better address the needs of modern medicine and biotechnology. A key research focus is placed on materials for 3D printing and bioprinting, which enable the fabrication of structures that mimic natural tissues. By combining polymer chemistry with cell biology, the team designs bioinks that not only meet specific physical and mechanical requirements but also support cell growth, viability, and proper cellular function. In parallel, advanced nanoencapsulation systems are being developed to enable precise and targeted delivery of active compounds, such as anti-inflammatory, anticancer, and tissue-regenerating agents—an approach that is particularly important in personalized medicine.
Another important area of the group’s research involves biodegradable materials derived from natural resources and enriched with plant-based bioactive compounds. These materials may exhibit additional properties, such as antibacterial or anti-inflammatory activity, while remaining environmentally friendly. The use of renewable raw materials and by-products of the agri-food industry reflects the One Health concept, which recognizes the close interconnection between human health, animal health, and the natural environment.
A unique feature of the EPIBIOMAT Research Group is the introduction of the concept of epibiocompatibility into biomaterials research. This approach evaluates whether a material interferes with the “biological program” of cells—that is, the mechanisms that regulate gene activity. In simple terms, an epibiocompatible biomaterial does not induce changes that could negatively affect cellular function in the long term. This innovative and still rarely explored perspective opens new possibilities for assessing the safety of biomaterials and may contribute to the development of a new generation of medical devices.
The team is supported by modern research infrastructure that allows detailed analysis of material properties and their interactions with cells and microorganisms. Studies include assessments of biocompatibility, mechanical performance, biodegradability, and antibacterial activity, complemented by advanced analytical techniques that enable a holistic evaluation of biomaterial–cell interactions.
By integrating the expertise and resources of multiple research groups, the EPIBIOMAT Research Group operates in a highly synergistic manner, accelerating the translation of scientific results into practical solutions. Close collaboration with technology transfer units helps identify market needs and build strong links between science and industry. At the same time, the group provides an attractive development environment for early-career researchers, offering opportunities to work in a modern, interdisciplinary setting. As a result, EPIBIOMAT has the potential to become a key research hub in the field of biomaterials, combining scientific excellence, medical innovation, and sustainable development.
