Competition description
The purpose of the competition is to select 12 research teams within emerging research fields – Emerging Fields (EF), 4 in each of the field groups, i.e. in the humanities, social sciences and arts, in the life sciences, and in science and technology.
The prerequisite for a team to enter the competition is to submit a plan for the development of scientific potential for a period of 3 years, i.e. from 1.01.2023 to 31.12.2025. Teams that win the competition will be granted the status of a new research team within the emerging research field at the University.
Winners of the competition will receive financial support in the amount of PLN 1,000,000 over the 3 years of their operation, as well as the opportunity to receive additional support in competitions dedicated to EF team members.
The competition is open to research teams operating at the University, which in the last 5 years have demonstrated documented scientific activity – raising funds for scientific research, carrying out research projects and activity in increasing the internationalization of research at the University. The competition is open to interdisciplinary teams.
Members of the research team within the emerging research field must not simultaneously be members of any of the university centers of excellence established within IDUB.

Contest results
Edition I – Emerging Fields
The competition was addressed to UMK employees who, in the last 5 years, have demonstrated significant, documented scientific activity, activity in the field of raising funds for scientific research and staff development, and activity in increasing the internationalisation of UMK. Submitted teams may include existing teams (in one or more units at UMK) or completely new teams whose employees plan close scientific cooperation (including interdisciplinary teams, regardless of the university’s organisational structure).
The aim of the competition was to identify and select four Emerging Research Fields (Emerging Fields): two in the Humanities, Social Sciences and the Arts and two in the Life Sciences. The Emerging Fields selected under the competition will receive financial support over three years of their operation, i.e. from 1 January 2020 to 31.12.2022. Application to the competition requires an indication of the main research area to which the EF will be assigned (Humanities, Social Sciences and Arts or Life Sciences field) and specific, thematically narrowed research areas defining the specificity of the research conducted in the team, selected from a list of so-called research areas from Web of Science. If at least one research area overlaps with those assigned to Priority Research Areas (POBs) or already selected EFs, it should be explained how the new EF will complement the existing research supported at the GCM in this area and whether collaboration between the two EFs or EFs and POBs is planned.
Applications for the competition, according to the template attached as Annex 1 to these Regulations, should be sent by 20.01.2020 using the dedicated web form. A signed declaration from Annex 2 should also be attached to the application. Questions about the project can be addressed to ef@umk.pl.
